StaySharp Tip #1: Keep your mind sharp. Screen early.

This is the first in our series on StaySharp. Providing expert knowledge on ways to keep your mind sharp using an Alzheimer’s Intervention & Action Plan.

iDNA Health are experts in helping you understand your unique DNA profile and have created tailored health and lifestyle plans. We can help you understand if you have high-risk genetic Alzheimer’s genes, so you can be proactive with your health and reduce your risk of developing the disease.

Does Losing Your Keys = Losing Your Mind?

No! It is time to stop thinking that not being able to find your keys, or not being able to remember a name, are the warning signs of memory loss. Early decline in our cognitive ability and memory is very subtle and can only be detected through proper testing, specially developed to assess cognitive functions including memory and executive brain function (e.g. decision making), and must be administered by a qualified and trained professional.

Action Plan: Change Our Thinking About Alzheimer’s

It is time to change our thinking about Alzheimer’s. We need to move our attention away from the end result, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and begin to focus on how we can support and assess our brain health and cognitive function, long before we have any sign of memory loss.

When it comes to other diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis, we have a range of screening tools to help us assess the health and functioning of key organs and systems. We need to start to do this with our brain.

iDNA Health and SMarT Minds WA are very pleased to announce that we are making specific brain and memory testing available from February 2019.

Prof Ralph Martins from SMarT Minds WA is a world-leading researcher in Ageing and Alzheimer’s disease and was the first researcher to propose and demonstrate oxidative stress in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease. He is now working on developing early diagnostic tests for Alzheimer’s and says:

“I’m excited to be working with iDNA Health and offering to the public key services for those with Alzheimer’s disease or family history. My research has highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention.”

We encourage everyone from the age of 40 and above to assess their cognitive abilities, to get a head start on proactive interventions, to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. iDNA Health recommends that anyone with a family history of Alzheimer’s or dementia screen for APOE4.
