It seems that every second person you meet these days claims to be gluten intolerant. Is this just another diet fad that will come and go like so many before, or is this a real health problem that we should be taking seriously? Risk of gluten intolerance is genetic

There are a number of key genes that determine if you are gluten intolerant. Serious health consequences

The consequences of having gluten intolerance mutations are far more serious than some gastrointestinal discomfort. The genes that determine if you are gluten intolerant are a very important part of the immune system referred to as the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system, which is responsible for watching out for antigens, invaders, anything that is foreign to the body. Mutations in HLA genes, including gluten intolerance mutations, are a major cause of autoimmune disease. For people with gluten intolerance mutations, every time they eat gluten they are increasing their risk of developing a wide range of autoimmune diseases. Anyone who is gluten intolerant has to manage this risk carefully.
